About Joan.
For Joan O’Brien, art has always been her passion. No matter the sphere — whether it be art therapy or interior design — Joan has tackled her profession with the utmost respect, care, class, and artistry.
After earning a Master’s Degree in Art Therapy, Joan began work as an art therapist spending over 10 years in the field. She was instrumental in helping her patients express themselves through the creative process. Following her decade-long service to art therapy, she stayed home to raise her two sons.
In 2013, Joan returned to art as a profession, this time focusing on her love for design. After years of decorating her own home and helping friends and family design theirs, Joan decided to pursue interior design as a career. She studied at the Metropolitan Institute of Interior Design graduating in 2015 and forming Joan O’Brien Interiors, LLC.

Experience.
Joan has worked in Manhasset, Huntington, Greenlawn, Huntington Bay, Cold Spring Harbor, Rockville Centre, and Scarsdale. She has had projects that range from one room to whole houses. She is experienced in working with client contractors and architects.

Approach.
While being a stay-at-home mom, Joan became aware of how one’s home and personal space impacts a sense of well-being. In fact, a well-functioning and aesthetically pleasing space can often create a sense of comfort, satisfaction, joy, and pride. These factors, combined with her background as an artist and love of design, influenced Joan to pursue a career in interior design.
Joan prides herself in her stylistic adaptability — whether it be traditional, transitional, organic modern, contemporary, casual, formal, etc. As she says, “Good design is good design.”
One artistic flourish of Joan’s is incorporating client heirlooms and/or favorite pieces into their new designs. In doing so, this produces a curated, authentic, and personal aesthetic for her client — avoiding imitation of the box store look and, in turn, developing a space that looks collected.
